The board of directors at the closure-threatened Gwent schools theatre company will be forced lay off more than 30 workers, unless an appeal is successful. Artistic director of Gwent Theatre, Gary Meredith said if funding is not found notices will be issued by the end of September and the theatre faces closure in December. Newport-born actor and Hollywood star Michael Sheen, OBE has pledged his support after hearing about the funding cuts.

Michael Sheen grew up in the shadow of the steel and coal industries of South Wales but there was another towering figure in his youth as he started showing signs of what was to become a glittering acting career. That figure was his fellow South Walian Richard Burton. In this programme, Michael looks back at the Burton legacy with the help of a selection of family, friends and colleagues.

San Sebastian Award
Fifteen films from 17 countries will contend for the $120,000 Zabaltegi – New Directors Award at next month’s San Sebastian International Film Festival. Representing the U.S. will be debutante director Shawn Ku’s Beautiful Boy starring Maria Bello and Michael Sheen as the parents of a youth who carries out a mass shooting at a university. The festival runs from Sept. 17-25 in the northern Spanish beach resort city of San Sebastian.
